5 things you need to make your own candle at home!

A beautiful home is incomplete without the natural dispersed light of the candle ’.

Candle making is an experience in itself and often budding candle makers find it difficult to gather the basic things right because most of the content talks about advanced techniques without any mention of the simpler things that we need to take care of…

We have gathered the 5 basic things that every beginner should start with for candle making:

  1. Wax

If you'd like to make candles, one of the first decisions you'll have to make is which wax to use.

  • Soy Wax :  It’s a soft wax that does not produce any smoke while burning! Best for Jar candles.
  • Beeswax : It’s a very hard wax with a naturally sweet fragrance. It’s the most expensive of all the varieties of wax. Best for any sort of candle
  • Paraffin Wax : An economically viable option and preferred by most because it is transparent and hence easier to color. But it is chemically derived and produces the most amount of smoke amongst all the candles.
  • Blended Wax You can mix 2 or more types to manage hardness, texture, color etc…or also because you have a lot of leftover candles!

  1. Container

This is the most fun part of making the candle. Your candle will look as good as the container you pick!  You can use a really nice glass, a wooden, ceramic or terracotta bowl, a tea cup, an empty jar from Nutella or a coconut shell!

  1. Essential Oil

Essential oils are natural fragrance that set the mood of the space that you light the candle in, it gives the space a vibe!

So if you are a floral person – pick from lavender, Rose, Jasmine etc.  If you are in a citrusy mood then you can choose from lemon, citronella, orange, grapefruit etc.  If you want a warm, comfortable vibe then choose from vanilla, cocoa butter, chocolate as your fragrance!

  1. Wick

For homemade wicks, you can use any cotton made fabric like strips, rolled-up newspapers, paper towels, twine etc.

A candle wick works by delivering fuel to the flame ("wicking").

  1. Colors

Coloring a candle is the most interesting part for candle makers as you can give your candle a color of your choice and play around with different colors for giving it a unique and elegant look.

There are a few easy ways to color your candle:

  • Wax Crayons :  This is the easiest way to color your candle at home using your leftover crayon colors after using it for your drawings.
  • Food  colorings:
    1.
Oil Based: They will blend in the wax and give the color you want.
    2.
Water based: These will not blend with the wax but they give a texture and color to your candle if mixed or sprinkled on top.
  • Candle Dyes : Candle dye is a synthetic chemical that has been designed specifically for use in candle wax. Candle dyes can come in liquid, flake, or block form. Liquids are ideal for color mixing and having greater saturation, whereas block and dye flakes are best for moderate and pastel shades.
